At long last the Society is back up and running with 2 successful small scale events at Old Fold Manor and Brookmans Park, it was great once again to see familiar faces.  We are currently limited in terms of numbers for these early events, due to social distancing measures mandatory inside a clubhouse, and the need to respect clubs that are primarily for the use of their members.  Changing rooms and showers are also temporarily out of use,  so staying in golfing attire after play is the current norm.

Therefore my grateful thanks go to all the organisers, at both clubs, and to the society members for turning up and playing. We have 2 more events scheduled, the first at Brickendon Grange on the 22nd September which is now full with 36 members playing but I am holding a reserve list and then East Herts on the 21st October, this event will be advertised week commencing 14th September. I hope to schedule one more event during October as well so keep an eye out. As the days sadly draw in we will almost certainly eat before golf, which will assist with the inability to change attire after play.

Old Fold Manor, our first event, was a real test of logistics and adherence to policies. I am grateful to everyone that it went smoothly, and the club looked after us very well. The weather signs were not good for the 25th August but we started in breezy conditions with some bright sunshine, sadly for those towards the middle and rear of the field the predicted rain hit us on the back nine, and for 30 minutes, we were drenched. The rain however didn’t deter SOHGC members from scoring well.  The eventual winners with 37 points were Brian Macdonald and Robin Loader, on countback, from Neil Hewitt and Tim Corbett, proving that local knowledge does help or was that an early start and missing the rain!

Brookmans Park on the 7th September was a cloudier day, thankfully the weather behaved itself, so another battle ensued with some excellent scores seeing 7 pairs scoring 40 points or more. As always the course played long but looking at the scores maybe we need to play off the white tees in the future! An excellent 42 points saw Don Foster and David Brewer of Arkley walking away with first prize. With a superb 24 points on the back nine saw Keith Stafford and Alistair Clark claiming second, on countback, from two other pairs that included home members on 41 points.

I will leave you all with the thought that as golfers we are able to enjoy our sport in these unprecedented times, I will endeavor to arrange and manage as many internal and external events over the next 12-18 months as possible. The AGM will be held before the end of the calendar year and a new fixture list published for 2021, I wish you all well, please stay safe.
